Trivia – Home (EP)

Review by Steve Thomas-Green

I know I am way behind, review wise. But sometimes life gets in the way of music. I know, how dare it?

But I am now, hopefully, going to chip away at my Mount Everest sized promo pile.

Let’s begin in the North-East of England, with Trivia

This came out in mid-July and it’s a real statement of intent, from a band whose members are still at school. I think I’m right in saying that the band recorded this as a duo, but they are now a trio.

They don’t fit into any pigeonhole, but they create a melodic take on the lighter side of Punk with Grunge overtones. The music is very melodic, but it has enough of an edge to keep things interesting. Especially with Hannah’s guitar work, which occasionally dips its toes in the 1970s. Which is great to hear from someone who was only born in the last decade!!!

The sound, in general, is exceptional. They seem to have teamed up with Serial Bowl Records in Sunderland, which I’m sure has helped with the creation of this debut EP. And hopefully they’ll get loads of good advice. Because they have bags of potential.

My advice, is to re-consider the band name. There’s nothing wrong with Trivia, but it’s not a strong enough name if someone searches for you via Google, for example. If the band remain all female, maybe something like Trivia Queens… just to help stand out from the crowd. And of course, when they headline Glastonbury in 2040.

I’ve also just spotted a band with a similar name on You Tube, which is sharing the bands Trivia – Topic page

Song writing wise, I’m impressed. Track 4, Fade is probably the pick of the bunch. Mainly as it’s heavier with more energy. Without a hint of being patronising, you’d never know something this good was created by two teenage girls. Quite honestly, this is more professional sounding than 75% or more, of the music that comes my way.

I really hope that Lydia, Hannah and newer recruit Ava, really make a go of this… and then I can sit in my old peoples home with a smug look on my face, as I heard them from the beginning.

Well worth checking out
